I often explain it using a simple analogy: Think of your nose as a house. The outside of the house is what everyone sees, while the inside contains the walls, hallways, furniture, and support beams that allow it to function properly. When a rhinoplasty makes the nose smaller, it is essentially making the house smaller. If the structures inside the nose—such as a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, weakened nasal valves, or scar tissue—are left untreated, the inside of the house becomes crowded, creating airflow problems that may not have been noticeable before surgery, when the "house" was larger.

Because the nose is an organ, appearance and function are inseparable. The goal of rhinoplasty is not simply to create a beautiful nose, but one that is structurally sound, looks natural, and breathes well.

My philosophy is simple: A beautiful nose that doesn't breathe well is not a successful rhinoplasty.

Most patients are pleasantly surprised to learn that rhinoplasty is typically more uncomfortable than painful. The most common complaint after surgery is nasal congestion and stuffiness, similar to having a cold for a few days, rather than significant pain.

You can expect some swelling, bruising, and congestion during the first week after surgery. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work, school, or social activities within 7–10 days, although subtle swelling continues to improve over the following months as the nose refines and heals. To minimize the risk of bleeding, typically restrict strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and air travel for approximately 2–3 weeks after surgery.

When advanced techniques are used by an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon and nasal packing is avoided, most patients require little more than Tylenol for mild discomfort and are able to resume light daily activities within a few days. In fact, many patients tell us that the anticipation of recovery was far worse than the recovery itself.

In more than 98% of rhinoplasty procedures, Dr. Tadros does not use nasal packing or internal splints.

While many surgeons rely on packing or splints for support during the first few days after surgery, these devices can contribute to pressure, congestion, and discomfort. Instead, although technically more challenging, Dr. Tadros carefully secures grafts and establishes a strong midline foundation using long-lasting absorbable sutures that continue to support the nose throughout the critical first 12 weeks of healing.

By relying on precise structural techniques rather than temporary internal supports, most patients experience a more comfortable recovery and require little more than Tylenol for mild discomfort.
