What is Microneedling?
Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin.
Results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.
Microneedling uses tiny sterile needles to safely and precisely create controlled micro-injuries to the skin, triggering new collagen production. Dr. Monica Tadros MD offers micro-needling treatments for her patients in NYC & NJ to help rejuvenate the skin.

Micro-Needling In Depth
How does Micro-Needling work?
Microneedling does exactly what it sounds like, tiny needles enter the outer layer of your skin, causing 2 main effects:
1. microscopic injuries
2. temporary tunnels
These tiny injuries help to boost the amount of collagen and elastin in your skin and the tunnels or channels that are left by the needle paths allow topical therapies to better penetrate the skin, thus enhancing their effects.
Skin needling, also called microneedling therapy, collagen induction therapy (CIT), and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains fine needles. The needles are used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury.
Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Through the process of neovascularization and neocollagenesis, there is an improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. This stimulates a process of collagen production through the skin’s own natural healing mechanisms.
How long does the procedure take?
Treatment time will vary depending on the surface area treated but typically will range from 15–30 minutes. Because a topical anesthetic may be applied ahead of time plan to spend between 30–60 minutes in the office.
Ideal candidates for Micro-needling
The best candidates are people with:
- Overall good health
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Hyper-pigmentation/ Hypo-pigmentation
- Acne scars
- Anyone who wants a fresher look to their skin and a youthful glow
How many Micro-Needling treatments will I need?
Some patients will see results after the first treatment but most patients need 2-3 treatments in order to receive optimal results.
Recovery & Downtime
Most patients will experience a downtime of less than 24 hours. You will notice immediately after the treatment a bright red tint to the skin treated. Downtime also depends on the setting that the NYC microneedling specialist uses on the patient's skin but on average, patients are red for 2 days.
Immediately after a micro-needling treatment the skin can appear flushed like a light sunburn to deeper pink with pinpoint bleeding for deeper treatments. Typically any redness will resolve within 1–2 days. Make-up can be applied immediately. Mild discomfort and redness are common effects.
The popularity of microneedling has exploded in recent years because it is effective for a variety of conditions, it doesn’t require a prolonged recovery, and it’s relatively painless. Here in NYC, many potential clients are busy professionals that are unable to take a week or more off from work yet they want to undergo proven treatments to look their best.
The needling procedure may leave them with 2-3 days of redness and swelling so it can be done before the weekend and it can be repeated several times, usually once a month for 3-4 months to get the best result.
The advantages of microneedling include: can be safely performed on darker skin types (as opposed to many skin smoothing lasers that may not be used on dark skin), and is a relatively quick process (can be performed in 15 minutes).
