What is a Headache?
A headache is pain in any region of your head. There are different types of headaches and different causes for each type. The difference is usually the part of your head in which you feel pain. Your headaches may be isolated to one side of the head, the temples, or may radiate pain across your head.
Headaches can develop gradually and can last from an hour to several days, depending on the type of headache. To get proper treatment for your headaches, your doctor, Monica Tadros, must know all your symptoms and do some tests.
What Causes a Headache?
Headaches can be caused by various reasons. Sometimes these are not health-threatening, while other reasons may be symptoms of more serious health issues. Talk to your doctor at our Sinus, Sleep & Facial Plastic Surgery Center to find out what is causing your headaches.
Sometimes headaches are caused by overactivity of chemicals, nerves or blood vessels in your head. Overuse of your muscles in your head or your neck can also cause headaches. Headaches can even be genetic.
Other times, headaches can be caused by exercise, chronic coughing, or sex. Poor sleep, skipped meals, stress, certain foods and alcohol can trigger a headache as well.
What Are the Types of Headaches?
There are different types of headaches. The type is determined by the cause of the headache.
The different types of headaches include:
- Primary headaches: Primary headaches are not the result of another medical condition. This is the most common type of headache. A primary headache occurs when there is overactivity in the brain. This can be a chemical overactivity or just from overworking the muscles in your neck and head. Primary headaches include cluster headaches, migraines, and tension headaches.
- Secondary headache: This type of headache is triggered by a disease that affects the pain-sensitive nerves in the head. Causes of secondary headaches can include a sinus infection (sinus headache), blood clot, brain aneurysm, or dental problems.
How to Make Headache Go Away?
Some headaches can go away with Tylenol or ibuprofen. If this doesn’t work, your migraine headache doctor can test you for magnesium deficiency. Low magnesium may be worsening your headaches. Your headache doctor may also prescribe you antidepressants for your headaches. Antidepressants can manage your serotonin imbalance, which may be causing your migraine headaches. Your doctor may also recommend surgery to eliminate painful muscle spasms in your head.
For sinus headaches, you should try avoiding allergens or other triggers, use saline to clean out your sinuses or use a humidifier in your home.
If your headaches last longer than 12 weeks, you should see the best plastic surgeon and get a CT scan to check for blocked sinuses.
