Facial Paralysis Surgery

Facial paralysis

By Monica Tadros, M.D., F.A.C.S.

The most common approach for reconstruction is direct facial nerve repair with or without grafting, nerve transfer, cross-facial nerve grafting, and muscle transfer (either regional muscle or free-muscle necrotized transfer).

Facial Paralysis Causes

Although facial paralysis can manifest for a number of reasons, some of the more popular reasons include:

  • Tumor
  • Surgery
  • Infection
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Injury
  • Bell’s Palsy, temporal bone swelling, generally caused by a viral infection

Facial Paralysis Treatment in NYC & NJ

The following facial procedures may be recommended for NJ patients to treat facial paralysis:

  • Muscle Transfer
  • Neural Treatment Techniques
  • Nerve-Grafting Techniques
  • Eyelid Lift
  • Face Lift
  • Brow Lift
  • Tear Duct Surgery. Patients with watery or dry eyes, which can lead to corneal dryness, irritation, and excessive tearing, traditionally require tear duct surgery. During this procedure, a small incision is made next to or inside the nose. Our LIPSG facial plastic surgeon Dr. Tadros will use endoscopic techniques to bypass the blockage and enable the tears to drain into the nose. In cases of dry eyes, procedures include those that can block the tear ducts with small plugs in order to add moisture to the eyes.

Benefits from Facial Paralysis Surgery

Some of the benefits of facial paralysis surgery and the reconstruction in facial paralysis include the following:

  • Facial symmetry at rest
  • Symmetrical smile
  • Voluntary, coordinated, spontaneous facial movements
  • Oral competence and eyelid closure with corneal protection
  • Absence or limitation of synkinesis and mass movement
